Questions and answers

— I've always wanted to make my family tree. Could you suggest what I should do first?
First we'd recommend speak to your relatives, write down their memories, facts of their lives and the lives of your ancestors. Ask to show you old photos and documents, they contain a lot of information. You could also find your relatives on the Internet - in social networks, for example.

— What's the difference between a computer license and a portable USB one? What is a commercial license?
We described our licenses on this page.

— I can't find my activation code for the program. Do I have to buy a new one?
— No, you don't. Log into Personal area at our site and enter your email address that you used for buying your license. Copy your activation code from Licenses. You can contact us as well.

— I have paid the license. When will I get the activation code?
— Usually the system sends an email with the activation code as soon as the payment has been accepted. If you haven't received it, please check all folders of your email box and contact us.

— My tree already contains more than 500 persons, and I am afraid to lose my data in case of hard drive breakdown. What can I do?
— We recommend to make backup copies and keep the archive in a secure place (such as USB disk or a cloud storage). Click “File” - “Save to archive”, enter a name for your archive. The archive contains .atdb file and its folder named *.files. Also Agelong Tree suggests creating backup files, please always agree. In case of data loss you can restore data from the archive. Please check that the option Create backup files is on in Program options

— I'd like to show the tree to my relatives, they live in another city. How can I do it?
— The easiest way is to save the tree as PDF, PNG, JPG or HTML file (Save button on the left from the tree) and to email it. There is also a more interesting solution: your relatives can install Agelong Tree on the computer (a license is not necessary if they do not want to edit the family tree). You save data to an archive (FileSave to archive) and send the .zip archive to your relatives. They unpack the archive and open the data file in Agelong Tree. They will be able see all the information, the family tree, print it, etc

— What minimal size should a person's photo be?

— I want to print my family tree on a large sheet of paper. How can I do this?
— Build the family tree and press Save button on the left from the tree. Choose PDF or SVG, enter a file name. Send the file to a printing service. Please note that Acrobat Reader cannot open PDF documents that are wider than 5 meters.

— How to save a part of my family tree into a separate data file?
— First you need to filter off the persons that you want to exclude: find a suitable filter on the Persons tab or create a new one and tick it. For example, use Present in tree filter: build a tree, then collapse (with - symbol) the branches that you do not need and then tick the filter Present in tree on the Persons tab. Go to FileSave filtered as… and save the part to a separate file.

— We have two separate family trees, with one common person in them. Is it possible to join the two family trees in one?
— Yes, it is possible. First you need to add information from the first family tree to the second: 1. open the first tree in Agelong Tree, then click File - Append data from and choose the file with the second tree. Both family trees are in one file now. 2. Next you need to join the trees into one. Agelong Tree app builds trees according to events that unite people into families: child bearing and marriages. You need to create or edit the event that unite these two trees and specify the participants of the event from both trees. For example, create a Marriage, add “Husband” and choose a man from one family tree, add “Wife” and choose a woman from the other family tree. Sometimes the common person from the two trees is found twice in this file. It means that the necessary family-uniting event is already created, you just need to delete the duplicate. Rename one of the duplicates (for example, John1), replace John1 with John (the other duplicate) in all events where John1 takes part, then delete John1.

—Is it a time-limited subscription or a lifetime license?
— This is a lifetime license. The license is valid for all versions 6.*.

—-I installed a free version on my computer, then I bought a license for portable USB disk. Can I transfer my data fro the free version to the paid one?
— Yes, follow this instruction.
